Abstract
Working parents are demanding high quality after school programs for their middle school aged children. While most efforts are focused on child care for ages 0-10 years, there is a need for quality care for the 10-15 year olds. These adolescents still need adult intervention and involvement. Middle school students are at risk! This statement alone has motivated many communities to open after school programs for middle school students. However, to keep adolescents corning to the programs, they must be excited, motivated, and actively involved in the program. Also, parents must feel that their children are getting quality care. In an attempt to help provide quality programs, either through existing programs or in developing new ones, I have developed a Quality Checklist for middle school after school programs. This checklist will serve as an assessment tool to see where the program needs improvements. The overall goals of this project are to help in providing quality middle school after school programs throughout the United States and to make the reader aware of the need for such programs.
