Abstract
Most quality early childhood programs, including Early Head Start, support toddlers and families through the transition to a preschool classroom when the children turn three years old. This capstone project, based on current research and developmentally appropriate practice, provides guidance to early childhood teachers and administrators, which will help them to maximize continuity for the child and family throughout the transition to preschool. Three recommendations are reviewed: (a) Programs must prepare and transition toddlers appropriately, (b) programs must involve families sensitively, and (c) programs must communicate effectively. A sample Individualized Transition Plan/Checklist is included.
