Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) can significantly impact physical functioning, mental health, social support, and overall quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 12-week standardized exercise program on quality of life and functional capabilities in adults with SCI. Participants completed a self-guided exercise program consisting of aerobic and strengthening activities performed twice weekly for 12 weeks. Outcome measures included the Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM), 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Assessments were completed at baseline, post-intervention, and at a 6-month follow-up. Paired-samples t-tests were conducted to evaluate changes between baseline and post-intervention outcomes. Results demonstrated significant improvements in functional independence, walking performance, perceived social support, and quality of life following participation in the exercise program. Mean SCIM scores increased from 4.2 at baseline to 5.2 post-intervention (t(5) = -2.74, p = .041), while mean 6-minute walk test step counts increased from 118.7 to 164.3 steps (t(5) = -27.82, p < .001). Mean HADS scores decreased from 16.9 to 13.7 (t(5) = 7.06, p < .001), indicating reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. Mean MSPSS scores increased from 14.6 to 17.2 (t(5) = -17.00, p < .001), suggesting enhanced perceived social support. Although some outcomes declined at the 6-month follow-up, scores generally remained improved compared to baseline values. The findings suggest that participation in a structured exercise program may contribute to improvements in physical function, psychosocial well-being, and overall quality of life among adults with SCI. Future research is recommended to further examine the long-term effects of exercise interventions in this population.
