Abstract
This study examined relationships among early sport specialization, emotional intelligence, and athletic burnout in 170 collegiate athletes. Athletes who specialized early reported greater emotional and physical exhaustion than non-specialized athletes. Emotional intelligence did not moderate the relationship between specialization and burnout but was associated with lower exhaustion. These findings suggest that emotional intelligence may help protect athletes from burnout, while the effects of early specialization may also depend on demographic factors such as gender.
