Abstract

This dissertation examines the effectiveness of coaching at the collegiate level, focusing on continued educational standards and requirements for NCAA coaches. Building on an extensive literature review, the study explores the components of effective coaching, the value of structured coaching education programs, and the alignment of these frameworks with the developmental needs of collegiate athletes. The empirical portion of this research centers on a Four Round Delphi survey designed to gather expert opinions from D1 Sport Coaches and Sport Coach Researchers to reach a consensus on a specific topic or issue. Using qualitative data analysis (QDA) and word mining techniques, the study identified recurring themes and key phrases in responses. Each survey question was analyzed independently to preserve the integrity of the participant insights and to maintain alignment with the specific contexts of the questions. Findings from the study reveal critical insights into how formal coaching education impacts effectiveness, athlete development, and program success. The results highlight the need for consistent educational standards, certification processes, and professional development opportunities to enhance the competencies of collegiate coaches. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating athlete-centered methodologies and evidence-based practices into coaching frameworks.
