Abstract

By looking at the origination of the image of the witch we can see how this has reflected in the representation of women through the media. Originating in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve, the image of the witch has transitioned from an evil and threatening religious view of women to a secular and less threatening image. This image has allowed women to test social roles and gender norms that women are confined to. By looking at popular films and television programs in American culture we can see how the image of the witch has changed as well as allowed women to test social boundaries and gender norms. We are also able to see how the image of the witch has remained popular in American culture, with a continued presence that allows women a freedom that they otherwise would not be allowed to utilize.
