Abstract
The current nursing shortage is and will continue to have an impact on safe patient care for years to come. An examination of the statistical data available by nationally and statewide will provide a basis why this shortage will not go away soon. What are the current staffing concerns of nurses that affect the consumer in providing safe patient care? Examinations of the research available relating to extended work hours, fatigue and slept debt used by others in industries that affect public safety? How can consumers become informed on the debate of safe patient care? What safeguards are before Congress and the state legislature to protect the consumer and the nursing profession for the future? How can consumers become aware of the issues, the safeguards nurses are working towards, and how to assist in making healthcare safe for everyone.
