Abstract
There is a need for assessing the cognitive development of three and four year old children. It is important that this be done according to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) guidelines called Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP). This study has used NAEYC's DAP text as a guideline to create an assessment tool and practical strategies handbook for teachers. The handbook will help teachers assess their student's cognitive development in the areas of oral language, emergent literacy, and math concepts. This will help teachers deliver a curriculum and classroom environment that promotes each child's maximum intellectual growth.
