Abstract
Research in the areas of early brain development, the works of Lev Vygotsky, reading aloud to young children, and parental involvement supports a family literacy model to be implemented in the preschool years when children begin constructing knowledge about literacy. The model presented incorporates research in the above areas to promote meaningful preschool literacy experiences that will ultimately lead to greater reading success in the primary grades.
