Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish the validity of the subscales of the Test of Memory and Learning (TOMAL), a test of memory developed for use with children and adolescents (Bigler & Reynolds, 1994). Specifically, performance on the subtest Word Selective Reminding was compared with performance on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R). Subjects (n = 205) were recruited from an undergraduate psychology class at Brigham Young University where their participation was acknowledged with extra class credit. Participants signed an informed consent prior to the completion of testing and were between the ages of 17 and 19 years. A counter-balanced format was utilized in presenting the TOMAL, RAVLT, and the WMS-R. The Word Selective Reminding (WSR) subtest is somewhat similar in structure to the RAVLT. In the present study it was found to correlate highly with the Verbal Memory Indices of both the TOMAL and the WMS-R (.607, p < .001; .369, p < .001), as well as correlating significantly with the Composite and Delayed Recall Memory Indices of the TOMAL and the WMS-R. WSR did not correlate significantly with the Nonverbal Memory Index of the TOMAL or the Visual Memory Index of the WMS. These results suggest good internal consistency of the TOMAL and provide evidence for the construct validity of the WSR subtest. WSR trials also correlate well with RAVLT trials, with trials one and three of WSR correlating significantly with corresponding RAVLT trials (.450, p < .001; 320, p < .003). It is hypothesized that the slightly dissimilar administration methods resulted in slightly different learning curves, but this was expected. The concurrent validity of the WSR subtest is well established.
